In October 1982, a friend of mine who owned a travel agency in Bali approached me and requested me to handle his clients, who were Italian and spoke very rudimentary English. That was the first time I had used my Italian language skills. When I met them at Bali International Airport, the first question they asked me was, “What is your best diving in Bali experience?” I had to tell them I had to find out. I didn’t know the answer, but I told them that they would hear the fantastic news the next day, which they did.
I went to my friend’s house and met Bli Monyoh, a fisherman who lives in Sanur, a settlement on Bali’s southeast coast. Bli Monyoh was a great conversationalist. I knew he was an excellent fisherman who was also quite clever when shooting fish. He also had a natural flair for diving and used very basic dive equipment for best diving in Bali experience.

I inquired as to the best diving locations, and he said that to find the most fun dive, one needs visit two or three different locations in the interesting underwater world found between coral reefs. Mr. Bli Monyoh consulted his Balinese calendar to determine the best day for a trip to the sea. Dive was a huge passion for my clientele.
My experience at Semawang
On the first day, he took us to Semawang, near Sanur, in his outrigger sailboat, which he owned. The hotel is directly in front of Sanur Tourist Beach. A few meters deep dive was rewarded with breathtaking underwater landscapes, table and trophy-shaped coral and sponges, and a kaleidoscope abundance of multicoloured fishes swimming past. I am neither a swimmer or a diver; instead, I simply wait on the boat and prepare the necessary items for when they go up to sea. It had been a beautiful day for scuba diving in bali.
After that, Bli Monyoh brought his buddy, an intelligent diver named Agung Toya, a gun (exactly an arrow) wound with a strong rubber band made of tyre, which they used to shoot the arrow. Bli Monyoh prayed to God in front of a temple before he moved to Sanur and put an offering and fragrant incense in front of the temple.
Along the route, which was approximately an hour and a half away, he stopped numerous times to pray for God’s favour, safety, and good fortune in places where there were temples. He did this even before he came into contact with the water during our diving in Bali experience.
When we arrived in Buitan, a very traditional fishing village located in the district of Manggis Karangasem in eastern Bali near Candidasa, I was taken aback by the beauty of the landscape, a spectacular panorama of the terraced ricefields, rural ambience, and the majestic Mount Agung in the distance, which for Bali is the place of the Supreme God and “The Navel of the World.” When we left Buitan, we travelled to the nearby town of Candidasa.

The sea was wonderful, with crystal pure blue water that had stayed undisturbed by contemporary influences, seducing everyone, especially beach and diving enthusiasts, to go swimming in it. Buitan is now home to a luxurious 5-star hotel and a few lesser lodgings in Balinese-style bungalows and great way to check the Scuba diving in Bali experience.
When we were preparing for the dive, a kind local man came up close to us and generously offered his wooden boat, which he had previously used, hoping that we would catch many fish. A calm sea greeted us as we set off at nine o’clock in the morning. We arrived at the coral reef, about 50 metres from the beach and where the wave breaks itself. We observed a spectacular underwater world amid the coral reefs while the weather was very nice time for diving in Bali.
Because they were PADI certified divers, my Italian customers brought their diving equipment to the resort. The local divers, on the other hand, relied on their abilities. We fished a lot (just chosen fish), and one thing that shocked me was that Bli Monyoh caught four king lobsters. Wow, wow, wow, what an amazing day.
Upon completion of our excursion, we returned to the beach, where a local guy had set up a wood fire and prepared food using fresh ingredients such as chilies, onions, garlic and salt with coconut oil. We cooked our fish on the beach in a laid-back ambiance with a gentle wind from the water, and then sat down to a great gala meal in true cowboy fashion. Wow, what a beautiful day we had. We truly rejoiced and enjoyed ourselves.
